PSHE & RSHE
Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) at Peafield Lane Academy
At Peafield Lane Academy, we believe every child deserves an education that prepares them not only for academic success but also to thrive as rounded citizens in modern society. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education sits at the heart of this commitment as well as preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life in a digital age. We recognise the experiences a child has during the formative years of their life has such an impact on the kind of citizen they will develop into and become in the future. A lot of this important time is spent in school so it is essential that we work in partnership with parents so that we can make a positive difference and create a strong foundation that can be built upon as children continue to grow, develop and flourish.
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is carefully designed to be developmental and progressive. From the moment children join our school, they begin to explore emotional literacy—learning to recognise, name and talk about feelings. This foundation grows year by year, helping pupils to manage emotions, develop resilience, and make informed decisions that support their own and others’ wellbeing. We believe by embedding PSHE across our school culture, we nurture a community where respect, inclusivity and responsibility flourish. In doing so, we prepare our pupils not only for the challenges of childhood but also for adulthood, work and active citizenship.
The aim for our RSE curriculum is to help our children to build healthy friendships and positive relationships in an age appropriate way. And objectives of our RSE curriculum are concerned about raising awareness of attitudes and values, developing personal and social skills and promoting knowledge and understanding. RSE will look at aspects of diversity in an inclusive and non-judgemental way.
The statutory Government guidance that we must follow can be found at:
Relationship Education
Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.
Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age-appropriate way, your child’s school will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.
By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content about:
- Families and People who Care for me
- Caring Friendships
- Respectful, kind Relationships
- Online Relationships
- Being Safe
Health Education
Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:
- Mental Wellbeing
- Internet Safety and harms
- Physical Health and Fitness
- Drugs, alcohol, tobacco and vaping - Facts and Risks
- Personal safety
- Basic First Aid
- Developing bodies
What are your Parental Rights?
The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued at Peafield Lane Academy. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up.

At Peafield Lane Academy we teach PSHE/RSE through Jigsaw. It provides accurate information about the body, reproduction, sex and sexual health. It also gives children and young people essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships, focusing on staying safe both on and offline.
If you would like to review the resources to be used in a particular year group in more detail, please contact us and we can arrange to discuss these with you.
The Right to Withdraw
You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.
If you do not want your child to take part in some or all of the lessons on Sex Education, you can ask that they are withdrawn. At primary level, the Headteacher must grant this request.
The science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. If you want to know more about what will be taught as part of the new subjects, the best thing to do is speak to your child’s class teacher, read our PSHE policy and the documents from Gov.UK:
